Stef Baxter is honoured to share and sell the work of his art school tutor, the highly regarded ceramicist, Archie McCall.
Archie McCall was born in Dumfries in 1951. His career in ceramics began in 1970 as an apprentice to potter John Davey. In 1974 he travelled in Japan and Korea before establishing his first pottery in Garlieston, Wigtownshire.
Archie was appointed full-time lecturer in Ceramics at the Glasgow School of Art in 1986, becoming Head of Department in 1992. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and his successful academic career took him to Singapore before retiring in 2013.
Archie’s work is represented in numerous public and private collections in the UK and abroad. He continues creating from his home at Kindar Mill, New Abbey, Dumfries in southwest Scotland. It is the natural environment of this area which has inspired much of the work throughout his career.
“I hope the pots and their surfaces are filled with life. Of things being born, growing, and maturing ; things that have come from the earth and which will eventually return there.” Archie McCall
